5 Easy Ways to Save Extra Calories

weight loss, cutting calories, counting calories, tracking macros, dieting tips, lose weight, paleo, gluten free, dairy free, vegan, keto, refined sugar free, low glycemic, fat loss, muscle gain

You guys know by now that I am not a fan of counting calories. This takes all the fun out of healthy eating / living a healthy lifestyle for me. But, if I can save some unnecessary calories here & there so that I feel better about eating an extra piece of pizza (or two) on the weekend with my friends, I’m all for it. I also know some of you are interested in losing weight or improving your body composition, so this is a special post for you!

If you want to know more about changes you can make to help you reach those goals, listen to the Ask Abbey Podcast Epsiode #5 where I chat about why you’re not seeing your body transform.

1. When you’re cooking

Ditch the oils when you can! I rarely use oils when I’m cooking food. 1 tbsp of Coconut Oil or Olive Oil is around 120 calories. And that’s if you just stick to exactly 1 tbsp, which is rare for me. I use zero calorie, nonstick Olive Oil or Coconut Oil sprays instead! I make sure to use a nice thick layer of spray on whatever I’m cooking so that it still has some moisture & doesn’t turn out dry!

2. When you’re ordering coffee

Ditch the syrups. Each pump of syrup in a Starbucks drink has 20 calories & they typically add about 3 pumps to a grande sized drink. Sure, an extra 60 calories one day isn’t going to do anything to you, but if you do that every day, week after week, it can add up quickly! If you’re not a black coffee drinker, you can use stevia to sweeten it yourself! Stevia is a natural, plant-based sweetener that has zero calories & zero sugar. Aka zero guilt. But it’s SO sweet. Just make sure you’re checking the labels of whatever Stevia you’re buying, because a lot of the ones I’ve seen have sugar added using sneaky names like dextrose, sucrose, rice syrup, sugar alcohol, etc. This completely defeats the purpose! I recommend the brand SweetLeaf because it’s pure Stevia & also comes in a ton of different flavors (chocolate raspberry, vanilla creme, english toffee). YUM!

3. When you’re drinking alcohol

Swap soda for soda water. Drinking Vodka Sprites might taste better at the time, but it’s reaaally easy to get carried away with extra calories here. 1 Vodka Sprite is close to 200 calories. Multiply that by 3 or 4 and we officially have an extra meal added to our day without even realizing it. Same goes for added syrups to cocktails. Avoid them when you can! Also, sugar makes hangovers SO much worse. The second I switched to soda water, I stopped having such tragic Sunday scaries. Add a couple lime wedges for flavor (or even bring your Stevia in your purse if you’re feeling real extra) & you won’t even feel like you’re missing out!

4. When you’re eating a meal

Here we’re going to add instead of subtract this time. Whenever you’re eating a meal, make sure to load up on low calorie foods like leafy greens & veggies! Not only is this just good for you & an awesome way to get vitamins into your diet, but it helps keep you feeling fuller for longer! Vegetables have fiber in them, and eating enough fiber is super important if you want to feel full! Then you won’t be tempted to reach for some chips 30 minutes after your last meal.

5. When you’re at a restaurant

Don’t be afraid to ask your server if you can make modifications or substitutions. I totally get that this can feel annoying, but at the end of the day, you’re paying for the meal and it’s your body. You have every right to ask some questions in order to get the healthiest option possible! Of course, I don’t do this every time I eat out. But when I’m trying to be mindful of what I’m eating, I’ll ask them what oils they cook certain foods in (so I can avoid unhealthy oils like vegetable oils), and I’ll ask them to leave out anything that has a lot of added sugar (like dressings). Also, it can always be helpful to ask for sauce/dressing on the side so you can control the amount you’re eating!
