I feel like blush is a forgotten makeup product that needs to be rediscovered ASAP. Adding a little blush to your makeup look is easiest way to give yourself that “I just spent all day in the sun without actually spending all day in the sun because #wrinkles” look.

So if you feel like your skin is lacking that gorgeous, natural flush when you have a full face of makeup on, it’s time to re-evaluate the blush you’re using.

Finding the right blush for your skin can be tricky. Here are the things I always look out for:

Blend-ability

Blush isn’t like eyeshadow- you don’t want a super intensely pigmented shade. Since blush is one of the last steps of makeup application, you can easily screw up your full face of makeup if you can’t blend it out! You can test this out at Sephora or Ulta by putting some foundation on your hand and applying blush over top of it. Try to blend it out- does the pigment become more subtle, or does it seem to be stuck there?

Buildable Pigment

Same thing here as above. A lot of blushes either have too much pigment or very subtle pigment that doesn’t build up. Usually once I blend out my blush I like to go back in with a little bit more to build up the color. The perfect blush will allow you to do that!

Undertones

If you’ve seen my YouTube video on how to choose makeup that complements your skin, you know that I always think about the undertone of the lipstick I’m planning to wear when selecting my shade of blush. To have the most cohesive, natural makeup look possible, the undertones should be very similar! (i.e. is it warm and peachy? cool and purpley?)

Ok, now that we now what to look for in a blush, let’s chat my favorite blush formula of all time.

Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hr Blushes

These blushes are IT ladies!!! They check off all of the boxes I listed out above, plus they don’t fade quickly on my skin (like many blushes do) and they just make my skin look healthy and glowy.

Here are my favorite shades (even though they all are gorg and now I want them all help):

A final little sun-kissed tip from me to you:

If you’re truly a little flushed from the sun, what’s usually the first place you see that burn? Your nose right? Sooo apply a little bit of blush across tip of your nose! This is a hot Korean beauty trend because it just gives you that fresh baby face look. Here for that.
