Thinking about how I used to fall asleep in college after a night out with all of my makeup still on makes my skin CRAWL. Like I actually can’t even think about it without cringing. We all know we’re supposed to wash our face before we go to bed, but… a makeup wipe can just do the trick instead, right? Girl!!! No. Properly cleansing your face is so important for removing all sorts of junk from your skin- debris, sweat, dirt, foundation, etc. etc. etc.

We have both oil based impurities (like sebum) and water based impurities (like sweat) on our skin. You know how oil and water separate when you try to mix them together? This is exactly why we need both an oil and water cleanser in our lives! We need oil cleanser to remove the oil based impurities and water cleanser to remove the water based impurities.

So while a makeup wipe will help to remove your makeup, it won’t properly cleanse your skin and remove all the grime that has gtg before we lather up in moisturizer. And because I’m over the top with all things beauty related, I consider myself a triple cleanser. Here’s my exact cleansing routine:

STEP 1: Remove Makeup with Micellar Water

I like to have a completely clean face before I even go in with cleanser. In my opinion, hands just don’t do the trick for makeup removal. I use a cotton oval for this step because cotton rounds are way too small. I drench my cotton oval in micellar water and completely remove all of my makeup (including any eye makeup and mascara).

STEP 2: Oil Cleanse

Now I go in with oil cleanser to remove those oil based impurities. Oil cleansing is also amazing because it actually adds hydration to your skin instead of stripping it away like a lot of cleansers do! I use a few pumps of my Julep Bare Face Hydrating Cleansing Oil and apply it to my face with my hands.

This is an anti-oxidant rich oil that has amazing ingredients like rosehip seed oil, grape seed oil, olive oil, and grapefruit extract.

FYI: This cleanser has been discontinued at Ulta since writing this post. Dermalogica Pre Cleanse is an amazing option, or check out Mad Hippie’s Cleansing Oil for an affordable option from a brand I love!

If you’ve never used an oil cleanser before- it feels a little strange at first! Because it’s oil it’s not going to lather up. But that doesn’t mean it’s not working it’s magic!

STEP 3: Water Cleanse

The true Korean Beauty double cleanse technique uses a foaming cleanser in this step. I personally haven’t used a foaming cleanser in years- I just stick to two that I know I love and switch off using them throughout the week! Make sure to prioritize your unique skin needs when choosing a water based cleanser.

My long time favorite is the Murad Essential-C Cleanser. It has more of a gel like consistency and feels super soothing! Another cleanser I’ve recently started using and also really like is the Mad Hippie Cream Cleanser. This definitely just gives you more instant gratification because it lathers up really nicely and makes you feel like you’re getting a great cleanse. So if you’re into that, you’ll love it!

Nowwww your skin is prepped and primed and ready for the rest of your skincare routine! Happy double cleansing!
