What’s the Difference Between A Compound and Isolation Exercise?|How to Make Your Workouts the Most Efficient

As I progressed in my health and fitness journey and started to learn more about fitness, I just started to have even more questions. How many times a week should I be working out? How much time do I need to spend on cardio? How should I set up my weight lifting schedule throughout the week? Which exercises target which muscles? So one of the reasons I started Ask Abbey was to answer those types of questions for any of you who are looking for more clarity too! PS: To learn more about how to set up your weekly workout split, listen to this podcast episode, and to learn which exercises target which muscles, check out my YouTube Series dedicated to answering that question! ⬇ I was especially confused when I started lifting weights. There are so many different things to consider once you start incorporating weight training into your weekly split- like doing push vs. pull exercises (I give you the quick low down on that in this blog post), and how to set …

This Blended Pumpkin Spice Protein Mocha Will Be Your New Fall Obsession | Paleo, Vegan, DF, GF Recipes

We’ve all probably seen 75 million pumpkin spice recipes at this point. But are we over it? Not even close. I can’t help it okay!!! In my defense, I literally started making fall recipes in September so I’ve had this one brewing for a while. If you feel like you’re over the pumpkin spice craze already this season… you won’t be after you try this recipe. Because this isn’t your typical pumpkin spice latte or pumpkin spice baked good. It’s a creamy, sweet and caffeinated- aka the breakfast of my dreams. It’s a Blended Pumpkin Spice Mocha. And can even be a Blended Pumpkin Spice Protein Mocha if you want it to be. Hello!!! This is the perfect healthy recipe for breakfast, or even a little late afternoon pick me up snack. And of course per usual with my healthy recipes, I made it gluten free, refined sugar free, and dairy free. It’s also paleo and vegan so extra bonus points- yay! I would give you a step by step list of how to make …

Why Am I So Bloated? Here Are The Foods That Cause Bloating & How to Prevent It

Let’s chat bloating… But before this topic triggers anyone, let’s level set expectations first. Is Bloating Normal? Heck yes it is. Bloating (to a certain degree) is a completely natural bodily response to eating food. It’s really simple af. If you feel like your stomach is flatter in the AM than it is in the PM, that’s because it is. And that’s because you just spent the entire night sleeping without consuming any food or liquids. Aka you just spent the entire night fasting. Contrast that to before bedtime after you’ve been filling your stomach with food all day and… Yeah, we get it. But I just had to point that out for anyone who finds themselves feeling extra discouraged by that bedtime bloat! (PS: this especially applies to anyone who’s recently been introduced to a diet called food combining. If you want to know my thoughts on food combining, I discuss it in this podcast episode). The fact of the matter is that most women have to hit extremely low body fat percentages in …

I Detoxed From Coffee for 2 Weeks… Here’s What Happened

If you read my recent blog post on my favorite Healthy Matcha Latte Recipe, then you know I mentioned how I can’t wrap my head around the fact that there are people who can function during a long work day with zero caffeine in their system. Well… I’m pretty sure I jinxed myself, because just a couple weeks after that I was hit with a horrible stomach infection and had a forced coffee detox. Like we’re talking 15 days of literally NO caffeine of any sort people. 15!!! Keep in mind I had worked my way up to a solid 2-3 cups of coffee per day when this happened (sometimes 4- not proud). So as you can imagine, the detox experience wasn’t the most pleasant experience I’ve ever been through. Considering if you should do a coffee detox yourself? Here’s what you can expect: #1. Headaches on Headaches I essentially had a 72 hour headache. It wasn’t migraine status by any means, but it was still a nice, constant pounding. Sounds super fun, right? Thankfully …

Gym Anxiety Got You Down? Here’s 7 Ways to Beat It and Finally Feel Comfortable in that Dreaded Weight Section

I used to be so intimidated by the gym… and TERRIFIED by the weights section. I thought I was never going to step foot in that area. Like ever. But of course, if you keep up with me on my other platforms (especially Instagram), you know that I love weight lifting now. So wondering how the heck I made that switch? Let’s chat. #1. Get Comfortable First If you’re a fitness newbie or just feeling out of shape from some time off, my first piece of advice is to jump back into fitness in an area that you feel most comfortable. For a lot of people, this means working out in your own home! When I first started working out, this is exactly what I did. And then continued to do for a couple years as I fell off and back on the fitness bandwagon (like over and over, lol). At that time, I knew NOTHING about fitness. So testing out workouts in the comfort of my parent’s basement was crucial for me in order …

Creamy Tomato Soup + Grilled Avocado Sandwich Recipe (Dairy Free, Gluten Free, Sugar Free, Paleo, Vegan)

I will never wish for colder weather, but I have to say… I am SO ready for cold weather food! Hearty and healthy soups, chili, and pastas are some of my favorite recipes to create. They’re just good for the soul kinda foods, ya know? I think we can all agree that there are few meals more comforting than the ultimate comfort classic that is grilled cheese and tomato soup. Thick buttery bread filled with gooey cheese dipped into creamy soup? Sign. me. up. But as much as I’d love to eat that meal 24/7, we all know it’s not the healthiest option. Store bought tomato soup can often be loaded up with hidden sugars (learn more about how to read ingredient labels in this blog post), and I like to keep the cheese and butter to a minimum in my diet. Don’t get it twisted though- I don’t believe in cutting food groups out entirely and I LOVE me some cheese, but if there’s a healthier alternative that I can easily swap in it’s …

You Are Going to Drool Over These Paleo, Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Refined Sugar Free Banana Chocolate Chunk Muffins

One of my absolute favorite things to do is to create dessert recipes that are gluten free, dairy free, and refined sugar free. I’m always on the hunt to find the perfect healthier substitute for not so healthy ingredients! (Lucky for you, I have a list of my favorite sweet and savory healthy ingredient substitutes listed in this blog post! ) But this is also a tricky task for me because I almost never follow recipes to a T. I just like to play around and do my own thing in the kitchen! But unlike cooking, baking is actually a science and 1 wrong move can totally screw up a recipe. So I decided to not take such a gamble and to try to learn a little bit about the science behind baking. Turns out there are very specific ratios to follow depending on what type of dessert you’re making! Especially when it comes to flour vs. fats vs. sugar. However… if you know me, you know I like to keep sugar to a minimum …

My Top 6 Favorite Foundations of All Time

Foundation has become my latest makeup obsession ever since I started putting more effort into my skincare routine. Like if I’m putting all this work into getting glowy, youthful skin, then I need a foundation that’s going to work with me and not against me! Agreed? PS: I chat through my entire skincare routine in this YouTube video: That means I’m super picky about my foundations. Here are my requirements: Long-Wearing Lightweight Natural, Skin-Like Finish (think subtle radiance without getting oily) Comfortable Wear Medium to Full Coverage (depending on my mood you know) Of course, foundation is going to wear differently on everyone depending on skin texture, type, etc. For reference, I’d say I have normal/combination skin that can lean a little bit oily in the summer and a little bit dry in the winter (lol, so helpful Abbey!!!). Ok, let’s chat brands! Lancome Teint Idole Ultra 24H Long Wear Foundation This is my favorite of all time. It’s so lightweight it literally feels like I’m wearing nothing! TBH I really can’t imagine anyone disliking …

My 11-Step Anti-Aging & Anti-Acne Skincare Routine (For Clear, Glowy, Wrinkle-Free Skin)

I am always on the hunt for skincare products that are going to help me maintain youthful, glowy, clear skin for as long as possible in the most efficient way possible. I’m not interested in all the b.s. skincare trends that come and go these days. And I couldn’t even keep up with them if I wanted to! I’d have a 600 step skincare routine by now if I bought every new “must-have” product that comes out. What I am interested in are tested products that WORK and are actually going to help me achieve my #skingoals. I posted my skincare routine when I originally launched Ask Abbey back in February- so naturally, my regimen has already changed since then (lol, do we expect anything less?). You know it’s not my style to keep beauty secrets from you guys, so it’s about time I share an updated skincare routine so I can dish on what’s old and what’s new. Keep in mind: This is my every day skincare routine. This doesn’t include any treatments or …
