Gym Anxiety Got You Down? Here’s 7 Ways to Beat It and Finally Feel Comfortable in that Dreaded Weight Section

I used to be so intimidated by the gym… and TERRIFIED by the weights section. I thought I was never going to step foot in that area. Like ever. But of course, if you keep up with me on my other platforms (especially Instagram), you know that I love weight lifting now. So wondering how the heck I made that switch? Let’s chat. #1. Get Comfortable First If you’re a fitness newbie or just feeling out of shape from some time off, my first piece of advice is to jump back into fitness in an area that you feel most comfortable. For a lot of people, this means working out in your own home! When I first started working out, this is exactly what I did. And then continued to do for a couple years as I fell off and back on the fitness bandwagon (like over and over, lol). At that time, I knew NOTHING about fitness. So testing out workouts in the comfort of my parent’s basement was crucial for me in order …

5 Types of Fitness Equipment That Will Take Your Workout To the Next Level

I will be the first person to admit that you don’t need much equipment in order to get an effective workout at the gym (or at home). You can easily get the job done with dumbbells, barbells and/or cables. BUT I also will be the first person to admit that I can get bored very quickly when it comes to workouts. No joke- I’ve never completed the same workout twice. I just can’t do it! I love variety because it challenges my mind and body in fun new ways every session. Incorporating different types of equipment is an amazing (and easy) way to completely switch up your workout. But deciding which equipment to buy can be confusing… there’s so much out there- how do you know what you need, right? So I’m sharing the top 5 pieces of workout equipment I’d recommend using either at the gym or at home in order to get the biggest bang for you buck in each and every workout session! #1: Resistance Bands (pssst: click on anything highlighted in …

3 Signs That You Need a Break From the Gym

I used to be one of those people that thought I needed to be in the gym 7 days a week in order to see results. Not only is this so not true, but it’s actually going to prevent you from reaching your goals faster! Rest days are SO important for both physical and mental recovery. If you want to see your physique continue to improve over time, your body has to be able to repair and rebuild its muscles. How can you make that happen? By taking rest days! To learn more about how putting stress on our bodies with high intensity exercise affects our ability to lose weight, listen to The Ask Abbey Podcast Episode #23 where I chat through this topic. To see how I stretch post workout, check out this YouTube video: I now take 2-3 rest days a week (usually 2, but depends on my schedule). I also have a “reset week” every 6-8 weeks where I decrease the weights, lower my sets/reps, and don’t do any high intensity interval …

4 Reasons Why Your Body Isn’t Transforming From Your At-Home Workouts

Even though I love a good gym session, there are plenty of days when I want to workout at home instead. It’s faster, more convenient, and just more comfortable (like you can find me in my ugliest clothes, watching The Hills & not worrying about anyone else the entire time). The one downside to at home workouts is that you typically don’t have access to the same equipment you can find in the gym. That is unless you have an insanely amazing at-home gym, and in that case I’m so jealous. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t get a killer workout in! It just means you have to get a little more creative. Here’s how to do it: 1. Invest in Fun Equipment Equipment isn’t cheap, but when you don’t have to pay for a gym membership, it’s totally worth it! Start off with dumbbells and resistance bands. Once you are ready to venture into other things & have saved up some more money, try various exercise balls like medicine balls, stability balls, and …

How I Finally Improved My Body Composition (Before and After Photos)

First let me say: You are beautiful in whatever body makes you FEEL beautiful. Don’t let Instagram tell you how your body is supposed to look. The only way it’s supposed to look is exactly how you want it to. Instagram has a funny way of making you feel like everything about your body is wrong. You need to be thin, but not too thin because that’s gross. You need to have muscle definition, but not a super ripped 8 pack because that’s too masculine. You need to have a booty, but that just right booty where you can tell it’s not from fat- because ew & you can tell it’s not from lifting weights too much- because ew. All I have to say to all of that is: alksdjffakldsjfaklsdjfalksdjflkasdf. Stop letting other people tell you how you need to look. YOU tell yourself how you need to look to make yourself FEEL beautiful. And that’s it. Second let me say: Transformations look different for EVERY. SINGLE. PERSON. Everyone has different genetics, hormones, metabolisms, abilities …
